Diverters, strainers and filters will improve water quality and reduce the amount of contaminants entering your tank. Over time contamination of stored water will occur naturally through the bio-organic breakdown of plant, animal and mineral deposits.
Regular care and maintenance is the key to a clean usable water supply, Victoria’s Health Department recommend water tanks be checked regularly and cleaned at least every 2-3 years.

A complete clean is required if your water tank has not been cleaned for more than 3 years and/or the water in your tank has been contaminated.
This process includes the walls of your water tank being thoroughly cleaned and the floor vacuumed, removing all sludge, sediment and contaminated water from your water tank.
This process is only used when a water tank has been regularly maintained and sediment build up is minimal, this allows a quick and efficient clean of any sediment that has built up in the bottom of your tank.
Approx 30% of original water is left.
The more sediment to remove from your water tank the more water is lost.
If you have multiple water tanks next to each other. Water can be transferred from one tank to another in order to keep any usable water, when one of the water tanks has been completely cleaned, the usable water can then be transferred back into the clean tank, and cleaning of the holding or extra tank can proceed.
